Meals with Jesus | Enacted Promise

The sermon explores how Jesus reveals himself through both the written Word of Scripture and the breaking of bread. On resurrection Sunday, two discouraged disciples walked away from Jerusalem, their hopes crushed by Jesus' crucifixion. When a "stranger" joined them on the road, Jesus himself opened the Scriptures from Genesis to Malachi, showing how all of God's Word pointed to him. Later, as they shared a meal together, Jesus broke bread—and their eyes were opened. This encounter transformed them from fleeing followers into bold witnesses who immediately returned to Jerusalem despite the dangers. The resurrection isn't just a historical fact confirmed by ancient writers like Josephus, Tacitus, and Pliny—it's a living reality that changes everything about how we live today.

Takeaways:

• The Word of God is our foundation for encountering Jesus. Before the disciples recognized Christ in the breaking of bread, their hearts burned within them as he explained the Scriptures. We must return to God's Word over and over, letting it shape how we work, relate to others, and face the darkness around us.
• An encounter with the risen Christ demands a response. The disciples didn't remain passive observers—they immediately retraced their steps through dangerous roads at night to share what they'd experienced. Meeting Jesus changes our plans and propels us into mission.
• Jesus reveals himself in familiar moments. He chose the simple act of breaking bread—a daily Jewish tradition—to open the disciples' eyes. Christ meets us in the ordinary rhythms of our lives, ready to transform our disappointments into divine appointments.

This week, we encourage you to ask yourself: "How will I incorporate the Word into my life to reveal Jesus?" Whenever you read Scripture, pause and pray, "Jesus, how are you revealing yourself to me in this passage, and what does that mean for me today?"

Like those first disciples, we all walk roads of disappointment—job loss, broken relationships, unmet hopes. But Jesus walks with us, often unnoticed, ready to open our eyes to his presence and purpose.
